High River Otters have proudly been Swimming in High River since 1964!
Otters focus on teaching through a fun, encouraging and positive environment.
Our swimmers come together as a team and have fun while they work hard to beat their personal best.
High River Otters is a competitive swim club for all ages. The Otters can be found training every week day at the Bob Snodgrass Recreation Centre Pool. Our season starts May 1st and ends mid-August where our swimmers may have the opportunity to compete at the Alberta Summer Swimming Provincials
Region 'E' in ASSA
High River Otters Swim Club swims as part of Region ‘E’ within Alberta Summer Swim Association. Teams within Region ‘E’ include Didsbury Aqua-Jets, Cochrane Piranhas, Canmore Koho, Calgary Swordfish, Calgary Tritons, Okotoks Stingrays, and High River Otters. Each team hosts a home swim meet and at the end of the season everyone competes in Region ‘E’ Championship Meet.
What are Regionals?
Regionals is like all the other swim meets we've attended throughout the season. The only difference is that the results from this meet are what qualify the swimmers for the provincial swim meet on Aug 16-18. Regionals will be a 2 day meet - Aug 10 & 11. Each morning will be preliminary swims with the top 8 swimmers moving onto the finals in the afternoon. The top 2 swimmers in each event for all age groups (except the 6&under group as Provincials do not have this age group) will then qualify for Provincials. However, there are opportunities for the next few swimmers to qualify for Provincials as a Wildcard (to be explained below).
Now, you may be asking “Does that mean if my child qualifies for Provincial, I have to go to Provincials?” The answer is – NO. Even if your swimmer qualifies for Provincial, you do not have to go to Provincials. They will let the next fastest swimmer attend Provincials. BUT, if you are on a relay team, it is expected that you are willing to go to Provincials. Therefore, if you do not plan on attending Provincials, please let the coaches know ASAP.
What is a “Wildcard”? To understand what a wildcard is, you must first understand what Provincials is and where the swimmers come from.
What is Provincials?
Provincials is similar to the Regionals swim meet but instead of competing against swimmers in your region, you are competing with swimmers throughout the province. ASSA has broken the province into 6 regions and we are in Region E. The top 2 swimmers from each region from their Regional swim meet automatically qualify for Provincials. That will give you 12 swimmers. But because the pool has 16 lanes, there is room for 4 more swimmers. These four swimmers are what we call the “Wildcard”. These wildcard are the next 4 fastest swimmers in the province. So they can come from any region and that is why at our Regional meet, the opportunity is there for the 3rd, 4th, 5th and maybe even the 6th place swimmers to attend Provincials.
